If you ever had to try out, audition or interview for something, you may have wondered how your appearance played into the decision. Was I just picked for my good looks? Did I miss a chance because they didn’t like the color of my shirt?

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

Who is it that God is looking for to do his work? Who will he call out of the crowd to hand over the important things he wants to see be done?

It’s not the people we would pick. Even the Messiah was said to have “no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 5:2)

So let’s ask again; who does God pick to do his work? Ordinary people. People like us.
