Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,
    mere mortals that you think of them?
They are like a breath;
    their days are like a fleeting shadow.

psalm 144:3-4

The Psalmist expresses awe that God would pay attention to people, but quickly goes on to pray for success and prosperity in the next breath. This is the essence of prayer: to stand in awe as the creation but then to earnestly entreat the Creator with a full expectation of receiving what is asked.

That is who we are. Made and cherished by God, once mired in the mundane and the sinful, unable to see the sublime all around us but now freed and seen and saved.
