Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:6

To hunger and thirst means to lack, not just from a self-satisfying desire or urge but from a deeper need. Hunger and thirst are essential, like breathing. There is something within the person Jesus describes that cries out for right and finds none.

But Jesus says, these are the people who will have plenty and be satisfied. Those who long to have righteousness sustain them will not be disappointed. Do we find that righteousness is scarce around us? Has our appetite been whetted for a more righteous life?
