For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

Matthew 16:25

A lost life is a lost life, but a life lost for Jesus is found. A life dedicated to the service of God can’t be lost, after all, because the beginning and end of the life contain a lifetime worth of God’s will. It begins with him, is sustained by him and ends when his purpose has accomplished exactly what he planned.

So if that is losing, what can keeping our life earn us? Death. To turn from the free gift of salvation is no life at all. So we lose our lives, in order to save them, not for ourselves but for Jesus! Even if we should die in the service of Jesus, salvation is ours.
