God is not human, that he should lie,
Numbers 23:19
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?
God is different. Maybe that’s obvious, but the ways in which that statement is true are worth examining. Human beings have a need to be accepted, loved, admired. God has no such needs. No amount of approval or affection from those he created will sway him. He can’t be cajoled or railroaded by a mob. I mean to say, God’s self-worth is not based on extrinsic affirmation but intrinsic knowledge of self.
This is, by the way, an egoless expression of self. He simply is all powerful, all knowing and whatever other superlative may be assigned to him.
So, what does that say about our character? How ought we to imitate him? If God is truthful, faithful, enduring in his character, we should be too. Moreover, we base our self-evaluation on the eternal and Spiritual rather than the opinions of the world.
