Did you ever notice that the words we use to talk about time and money are the same? Our culture makes those two things have a very similar function in our lives, so it is natural that our language reflect that.

In this world we operate under some assumptions; there are finite amounts of some key things; food, water, clean air and good health can’t always be taken for granted. Money can get you all of those things, but work is sometimes scarce too. But the thing which can make up for a lack of any other category is time.

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.”

Job 1:20-21

Time is the only really scarce thing in this life. If we have any other resources, we can only use them in order to better spend our time. What is money, but a way to trade your time with someone else?

If you have something that you can use in God’s service, use it now. Spend your time wisely, because it’s the only thing you can never get back and the only thing you can invest which carries over into the next life in spiritual rewards.
