For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Therefore remember that previously you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision” which is performed in the flesh by human hands— remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the people of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

Ephesians 2:8-12

God made us for good works; that is the inbuilt potential that we have. It is a gift of God, and not something you have to set up for yourself. Why this matters is that your potential is not momentum you have to build up your own head of steam for burning your own fuel and hauling your own load. Your potential is unleashed when we get on the track behind God and let his power help us to carry the burden along (Matt. 11:28-30).
