No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Matthew 6:24

What does it mean to serve? When we serve, we provide our time, attention and labor to that work. Service also implies being beholden to the whims and wishes of the one commanding us. Service means being humbled to the one we are serving, placed beneath them in priority and in value.

When we serve wealth, we give up what we have to pursue it. We sacrifice time and effort and our precious lives to secure something that can easily be taken away by the fickle forces of circumstance and by the whims of the people who control the economy our wealth relies on.

When we serve God, our devotion is not so easily cast aside.

For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? And which of you by worrying can add a single day to his life’s span?
Matthew 6:25-27

God provides. Greed only takes away. You can choose to serve the Creator of Man or man’s creation. Only one will assure you a safe future.
