You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:1

What a strange thing for Paul to say; be strong in grace. We know that grace is the freely given gift of God, the unearned forgiveness of sins that protects us from the consequences of our own wrongs. How then, in such a position where he is dependent and unable to do for himself, can Timothy be strong?

How is a knight strong inside a stone castle? How is a a sailor strong on a sturdy boat? How is a child strong in the arms of a parent?

Our strength is not brought into grace but brought up by it. We are strong because God is supporting us.
