“Don’t worry” is hard for us sometimes. I think when we hear that, we think Jesus is telling us “hide your anxious feelings”. That’s where the wisdom of the Scriptures can help.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
Proverbs 3:5-8
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.
If “don’t worry” is a struggle right now, start with “trust God”. You can plan all you want, but until you learn God’s plan, you will be disappointed. Listen: this is not a call to trust in some mysterious, unknowable, impersonal force of power over the universe. This passage is not even a call for humility in recognizing God as the supreme person of the Creator who knows more than we can comprehend. In this context, the Proverb writer is calling us to learn what God’s wisdom is and stating plainly that is something we can do!
Don’t be wise in your own estimation and try to blaze a new trail but follow God’s guideposts to a highway of righteousness. We already know God is making an eternal destination for us. Let’s follow his plan to get there!
