So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Galatians 3:26-27

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Romans 13:13-14

Here’s a depiction of our relationship with Jesus we don’t always focus on, but one Paul uses a couple of times. The baptism we undertake is an immersion in water, imitating the burial of Christ and demonstrating the Spiritual cleansing we undergo in a physical act. But once we come up from that burial, what happens to us?

We don’t simply dry off! Just as Jesus left behind his burial cloths when he left death behind in the tomb, to walk in a resurrection body and be clothed in heavenly form, we leave the covering of our former life behind, with all the shame and death it is tied to, and put on Christ. His glory covers us, and the things we could do wearing our old selves are not possible when we have put on Christ.
