But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Luke 1:30-33

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

Psalm 89:1-4

The only acceptable eternal kingdom is one with a perfect, sinless King. Anything less would degenerate into Hell: a single sin from such a tyrant would compound over the endless years as the consequences echoed on endlessly. Think of all the consequences of failures of earthly rulers and the resulting disasters. Race hatred, poverty, entrenched corruption, wars. Even a single misstep can take hundreds of years to resolve.

But a perfect King, ah! He can rule forever and commit no mistakes and his peace will never fail. That’s why we know that it wouldn’t be a resurrected David on the Eternal Throne. That’s why no son of David could be fit but God himself, in the flesh. Thanks be to God for our perfect eternal king Jesus!
