Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

1 Timothy 6:17

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-20

There’s a famous, old case of a bank robbery that took place from behind the vault door. The robbers got into a room in the adjacent building and then made a hole in the wall during the night and other times when the bank was closed. The big, heavy, carefully locked and guarded door did nothing to stop the thieves from coming through the bricks on the other side.

This world is just like that. Any vault we can make is still made of earthly stuff, on earth and vulnerable to earthly tampering. Even worse is to put our Spiritual riches into such an impermanent and corruptible safe. The only suitable place for the spirit is the spiritual safety of God’s presence.
