The rich rule over the poor,
Proverbs 22:7
and the borrower is slave to the lender.
If the Bible seeks to offend any one class of people, consistently and without ambiguity, it’s the rich. From the old testament to the new, the scriptures always have a word of warning for those with money and power. They are never allowed to rest easy. Proverbs to parables, prophesy to preaching, the rich are on the hook for a lot of the bad things in this world.
The generous will themselves be blessed,
Proverbs 22:9
for they share their food with the poor.
Why shouldn’t they be? We know, as Spiritual people, that this world and all that is in it are God’s own possessions and that, more lastingly, we are awaiting a permanent place among his eternal possession. Rich people, especially rich believers, are at risk of misusing the blessings of God, if not guilty of doing so. So we must ask, if we as a Church cannot be trusted with the trifling, fading things of this world, how can we ever become the everlasting kingdom?
